So I am totally guilty of wearing dark, gloomy colored clothes in the winter months. My winter wardrobe consists mainly of dark gray, black, and off white sweaters and shirts. While scavenging through the clearance racks at the mall this weekend, I choose to spice up my closet with some color…red to be specific.

Red is actually one of my favorite colors, but I only have one red sweater that I have had for several years (and I never wear). I decided to pick out items in the color red because it’s a fun, vibrant color, and a perfect color to compliment all those dark clothes in your closet. The color red also boosts your confidence and makes you feel a little more sexy (even when wearing a sweater).

Picking out a piece of red clothing can be tricky. There are many different shades of red out there and can be very unflattering depending on your complexion. If you have a fair complexion go with bluer reds and orange-reds if you have darker skin. Also, when wearing the color red stay away from red lipstick to avoid being too matchy. Instead, go with a more neutral color to your lips. When choosing shoes, again, stay with neutrals or black.

Here are some fun pieces I picked up this weekend:

Madewell red shirt

Shirt: Madewell
Necklace: Loft (sold out) Love this one too: BaubleBar
I love this shirt! The fabric is so soft and it hangs a little loose on my body, not too tight or form fitting. The hem in front is shorter than in back, and there’s a small button in the back on the collar to add a cute little detail. This shirt is perfect to dress up for the office or casually with jeans or leggings.
Express Sweater
Sweater: Express
Necklace: Express
This is a super comfy sweater. It’s loose fitting with 3/4 sleeves and perfect for leggings and boots.
red scarf

Scarf: Target
Shirt: Old Navy

I think purchasing a colorful scarf is a perfect (and simple) way to add a pop of color to your wardrobe. The red goes great with grays and blacks! It would be perfect to add a little something extra to those boring, dark winter jackets too!
For those of you who think red clothing is a little too bold for your daily wardrobe or for those that prefer to wear dark colors in the winter here are some other simple ways to add some red in your life:
  • Paint your nails red. Red nail polish is classic and timeless. Here are some fun red polishes: lollipop by Essie, x rouge by Formula X, and red my lips by Sally Hansen.
  • Red handbag. Another simple way to add a pop of color! Perfect with your black winter jacket. I found a cute cross body bag at Kate Spade and a red clutch from Nine West.
I gave you a few suggestions and easy ways on how to incorporate red in wardrobe. Now go to the store; it’s time to add some red in your life!!

Until next time…
